WINNIPEG — Two people waiting inside a parked vehicle early Saturday were carjacked when approached by suspects brandishing weapons.
Police say the victims were in the 100 block of St. Mary’s Road at around midnight while waiting for the owner of the vehicle inside a nearby restaurant.
The suspects demanded the people exit the vehicle and attempted to drive away. The owner of the vehicle came out and tried to stop the carjacking by opening the front passenger door. One of the suspects put the vehicle into reverse and sped off, causing the owner to jump out.
The stolen car was found abandoned by police shortly after in the 100 block of Enfield Crescent.
The K9 unit — led by Const. Weisz and police service dog Veyda — tracked one of the suspects hiding in a recycling bin at the rear of an apartment building, while the other was found in the 100 block of Kitson Street.
A 41-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, both from Winnipeg, face numerous charges. Their names haven’t been released.
