Winnipeg Cab Driver Assaulted, Robbed on New Year’s Day

Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg taxicab driver is recovering following a New Year’s Day assault in the area of Burrows Avenue and Buller Street.

At around 8:40 p.m., the driver told police he was punched numerous times by a male passenger who produced a knife and then robbed him.

He suffered minor facial injuries during the attacked.

Police say the same suspect is also responsible for breaking into two garages at around 11:40 p.m. in the 1200 block of Manitoba Avenue. Two vehicle windows were damaged during the break-ins and items from one of the garages were taken.

Police caught up with the suspect at around 12:10 a.m. in the area of Shaughnessy Street and Pritchard Avenue.

James Albert Sumner, 18, faces several charges. He remains in custody.
