A two-vehicle crash involving a semi-trailer truck killed a Winkler man Monday night on the south Perimeter Highway.
The crash happened at the Perimeter and Oakland Road, approximately one kilometre north of the Highway 3 junction, at around 6 p.m.
RCMP say the semi was travelling eastbound on Oakland Road when attempting to turn north onto the Perimeter Highway. The semi crossed the southbound lane and was waiting for traffic to clear in the northbound lane before continuing on. Police say it’s believed part of the semi’s trailer was blocking the southbound lane when a vehicle travelling southbound drove underneath it.
The 73-year-old man in the car was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the semi, a 43-year-old Winnipeg man, wasn’t injured.
RCMP had the southbound lanes of the Perimeter closed for approximately four hours while they investigated. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors.
Police are seeking a dark-coloured SUV that was in the area just prior to the crash. Witnesses reported that it had to swerve around the semi-trailer to avoid hitting it. Anyone with information is asked to contact Headingley RCMP at (204) 984-6913.
