A Manitoba puppy is at the centre of a fundraising campaign to help with a severe heart murmur condition.

Polly is a four pound Chihuahua / Shih Tzu under the care of Manitoba Underdogs Rescue. She was brought to MUR last fall when her owners could no longer provide care for her.

Volunteers say Polly suffers from pulmonary stenosis, a congenital heart defect, and her condition will only worsen without the needed surgery.

The procedure requires a balloon valvuloplasty procedure by a veterinary cardiologist in Minneapolis. The expected cost of the surgery is approximately $5,500 plus travel expenses.

“We’re desperate to help poor little Polly,” said Manitoba Underdogs Rescue executive director Jessica Hansen.

“It’s not uncommon for puppies to suffer from heart mummers, a condition that is generally outgrown with age. Every day that she’s left untreated her heart is like a ticking time bomb.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to raise funds for Polly. The MUR website is also accepting donations. As of Tuesday, more than $2,400 had been raised.
