Police Taser Meth-Fuelled Carjacking Suspect in Exchange District

Winnipeg Police CrestWinnipeg police had to Taser a suspect accused of trying to carjack a man in the Exchange District Thursday night.

Police say the vehicle owner had remotely started his vehicle at around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Albert Street and McDermot Avenue.

With its engine running and the doors locked, the suspect confronted the man as he approached the vehicle. He demanded the keys and motioned that he had a weapon. He was given the keys, but couldn’t unlock the vehicle. He left and began looking into other vehicles.

Police arrived to find the suspect had returned to the intersection. They tried to arrest him, but had to use a Taser to subdue the suspect, who they say was on meth at the time.

Dakota Francis Richard, 22, has been charged with robbery, resisting a peace officer and identity fraud.

He remains in custody.
