American home improvement giant Lowe’s will make a $5,000 grant to a local community organization at the opening of its first Manitoba store in Winnipeg next week.

The grant to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD) Foundation/Easter Seals Manitoba will support sports, recreation, social and leisure activities for children and adults with disabilities.

Through the SMD Leisure and Recreation Program, more than 250 children and youth and 125 adults can participate in meaningful activities, such as sledge hockey, power wheelchair hockey, summer day and overnight camps, art groups and community outings, such as to movies, bowling or swimming.

The donation will go towards items including equipment, facility rental fees and admission costs.

Lowe’s opens at 1799 Kenaston Boulevard on February 15 at 10 a.m.
