The Winnipeg Art Gallery is blossoming into summer as it unveils a seasonal exhibit this weekend.

Organic opens at the WAG on Saturday, paired with floral paintings and botanical watercolour illustrations.

“This exhibition mixes the old with the new, in practice and design,” said Jaimie Isaac, curator of Organic.

“[Artists] Chantal (Dupas), Tess (Michalik) and I mined the collection of decorative arts and came up with an installation of works from the 18th century that are in dialogue with new paintings.”

A perfect pairing alongside the WAG’s upcoming Impressionist exhibition, Michalik’s floral abstractions celebrate nature through Rococo-inspired lyricism and colour. Dupas’ watercolours suggest a more scientifically rooted and exacting approach, obscuring details to underline both a connection to and an estrangement from domestic botanicals.

Organic is on until September 3. A free celebration on May 4 at 7 p.m. will feature a guided tour with the artists. From May 26-27, drop-in guided tours will be offered at 2 p.m.
