This year’s Pride Winnipeg Festival is all about inclusion for those experiencing the event for the first time.
“My First Pride” is the theme of the upcoming festival, May 25 to June 3.
“Attending Pride for the first time can be an overwhelming emotional experience. It can be the last stop of someone’s journey of discovering and accepting who they are, or it can be the beginning or somewhere in the middle,” organizers said.
The parade on June 3 will make its way down Memorial Boulevard and York Avenue and will proceed down York Avenue turning southbound on Fort Street, eventually ending at Bonnycastle Park.
Grand marshal Brielle Beardy-Linklater was one of two nominated by the community for embodying the spirit and foundational values of the Pride Winnipeg Festival. Linklater is a two-spirit, transgender, queer woman from the Nisichaweyasihk Cree Nation. She will join honourary youth marshal Janine Brown, 17, a spoken word poet.
A two-day festival at The Forks will take place on June 2-3 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
