Salisbury House plans to eliminate plastic straws from its restaurants and replace them with a bio-degradable alternative as of June 1.
The Winnipeg restaurant chain says the move comes after some municipal governments in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe do away with plastic straws.
“Straws are just the beginning,” said corporate chef and spokesperson Jayanti Sharma. “We will be looking at all aspects of our business over the coming years in an effort to reduce our environmental impact at Sals.”
Sharma said the chain will also work to source as much food supply locally and to reduce energy consumption.
Stella’s Cafe and Bakery recently stopped automatically including plastic straws with its beverages. However, customers can still request them from their server.
