The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has named Tara Birtwhistle as associate artistic director effective July 1.

Birtwhistle danced with the RWB for 20 years, with the last 12 being as a principal dancer. She retired in 2011 to take on the role of ballet master with the RWB.

In her new role, she will work closely with André Lewis, RWB artistic director and CEO, to manage the artistic operations of the ballet company.

“Throughout my career at the RWB, I have had the privilege of working with and learning from many artists and leaders across the organization and throughout the dance world,” Birtwhistle said in a statement.

“I have had experiences that have taken me from the RWB School to stages around the world, from the studio to the boardroom and beyond. These experiences, along with my deep knowledge of the company, its history, our repertoire and our community have provided me with the skills and knowledge to take on this new role and I am excited and humbled by the opportunity.”

The RWB has also promoted five company dancers and welcomed five new dancers, totalling 25 for the 2018-19 season.
