WINNIPEG — The unofficial start of summer is on the midway as the Red River Ex kicks off for another year.

The fun begins Friday and runs through June 24 at Red River Exhibition Park with several new additions for 2018.

A new sand sculpture exhibit is part of this year’s Red River Ex. (HANDOUT)

Visitors can take in a new sand castle-building exhibit, learn about sea creatures at Shark Encounter, take in a slapshot of circus fun at the Hockey Circus Show (June 20-24), test your karaoke skills at EXtreme Sing-a-Long, or cheer on Manitoba youth aged 11-18 competing for $10,000 in the Starbound Youth Talent Show.

Wordly music lovers will also enjoy The Imbayakunas, an upbeat band from Ecuador that fuses traditional Andean sounds with contemporary Latin rhythms.

Over on the main stage, performers include Bleeker with Attica Riots, The Dead South with Terra Lightfoot, The Reklaws, and many more.

The sparks will fly during two Saturday night fireworks shows, scheduled for June 16 and 23.

Driving to the park? Use the west entrance for quick and easy access to all the fun.

Advance tickets are $12 (save $3). Pay-one-price wristbands are $37 in advance and allow you access to all the midway rides you can handle, plus your cost of admission. Kids six and under are free. Tickets are available online, at Giant Tiger, Safeway, Sobeys, Peavey Mart and Mac’s.
