Winnipeg police have a simple message for vehicle owners: don’t leave your ride running with the keys inside.

Police have recently seen a 54 percent spike in vehicle thefts over May and into June, with the majority of the incidents involving either a running vehicle, with stolen keys or keys that had been left inside a vehicle.

Police have the following tips to protect your vehicle:

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended while running with the keys in the ignition.
  • Do not leave your keys inside the vehicle, whether they are hidden or not.
  • Keys left at home (or at your business) should always be hidden. This will help prevent the theft of your vehicle if your home (or business) is broken into.
