WINNIPEG — A man who tried to rob a convenience store early Wednesday morning ended up being sent to hospital after cutting himself trying to make his getaway.
Police were called to the 500 block of William Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. for a report of an assault on a store clerk by a man armed with a knife.
Officers arrived to find the man had fled the store, but arrested him in the 700 block of William Avenue shortly thereafter. Police say the man claimed he was injured during a stabbing, but that wasn’t the case.
Police say the man tried to steal merchandise while holding a homemade-style knife, but was stopped by several employees and customers. The suspect was locked inside the store, but tried to kick at a cracked window to escape before police arrived. He caused a small hole in the glass and climbed through the broken window, sustaining several cuts. He was later treated and released from hospital.
Craig Armand Norman Ducharme of Winnipeg, 31, faces several charges, including disguise with intent. He remains in custody.
