An 18-year-old Winnipeg man has drowned after swimming down the rapids in the Lee River at the Old Pinawa Dam site.

RCMP say the incident happened Monday evening off Provincial Road 250 in the RM of Lac du Bonnet.

The man had been swimming in the rapids with friends when they lost sight of him and he didn’t resurface. Police say the man was not wearing a life jacket.

As conditions allow, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will continue searching for the man’s body. As the investigation continues, access to the Old Pinawa Dam Heritage Park is being restricted.
