Winnipeg Officer Head-Butted While Arresting Alleged Bank Robber

Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg police officer was head-butted by a bank robbery suspect as they moved in to arrest him on Thursday.

Police say the man tried to hold up a bank in the 300 block of Main Street on Wednesday afternoon, but left empty handed.

Roughly 15 minutes later, he tried again at a bank in the 200 block of Portage Avenue while brandishing a knife. Police say the man told employees he was there to rob the bank and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Early Thursday morning, police found the suspect at a hotel in the 300 block of Smith Street and placed him under arrest. That’s when, they say, he head-butted one of the officers, causing minor injuries.

Mitchell Gilmore Carpenter, 24, has been charged with two counts of robbery, possession of a weapon and assaulting a peace officer.

He remains in custody.
