Winnipeg Officer Dragged by Suspect in Stolen Vehicle

Winnipeg Police CrestA Winnipeg police officer is in hospital in stable condition after being dragged by a stolen vehicle in the south end of the city early Friday.

Police responded to a report of a man in a truck checking vehicle door handles in the first 100 block of Brookstone Place near Waverley Street.

A K9 unit located the truck in the 2500 block of Waverley Street at around 4:25 a.m. and conducted a traffic stop. The officer talked to the driver and then discovered the vehicle had been stolen. As he tried to make an arrest, the driver sped away, dragging the officer for a significant distance.

The 10-year member suffered painful but non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Police are looking for a blue 2014 Toyota Tacoma double-cab truck with a Manitoba licence plate of HJW 249. The driver is described as being Caucasian in appearance and was wearing a dark-coloured hat with glasses.

Anyone with information on the vehicle’s whereabouts or the suspect is asked to call 911.
