Summer travel set a new passenger record at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport.

Winnipeg Airports Authority says 895,381 passengers made their way through the air terminal in July and August — up from 863,942 in 2017.

“The increase in traffic this summer is directly connected to the growing interest in our city and province,” said Barry Rempel, president and CEO of WAA.

“Winnipeg and Manitoba are where people want to be, and we are seeing more and more traffic as a result.”

August also set a new record for total passengers in a single month with 462,719, a 3.4 percent increase over August 2017. July was up 3.9 percent over the previous July.

Airport officials also say the arrival of low-cost carriers Flair Air and Swoop Airlines contributed to the travel spike.
