An inmate at Stony Mountain Institution north of Winnipeg has died in custody.

Correctional Services of Canada says Nolan Randal Thomas, 26, died on Saturday. At the time of his death, Thomas was serving a five-year, four-month sentence for robbery, assaulting a peace officer, disguise with intent and failing to comply with a probation order since December 13, 2016.

RCMP say Thomas was found unresponsive in his cell at around 8:25 p.m. and was later pronounced deceased from his injuries. The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

Todd Jeffrey Irving, 47, and Cory Edward Derdak, 26, have each been charged with first-degree murder.

RCMP and CSC are investigating.
