Two people are missing after the snowmobile they were riding fell through the ice on the Winnipeg River late Tuesday.

Powerview RCMP received a report at around 11:45 p.m. and began a search of the area with fire departments from Sagkeeng First Nation and Pine Falls.

A search was initiated on the south shore of Fort Alexander First Nation. A set of snowmobile tracks were seen leaving the south shore heading north into the open water.

RCMP say the search continued for several hours, but ice conditions and quick-moving open water made it too dangerous to continue.

The identities of the missing snowmobilers haven’t been confirmed.

Mounties say the Winnipeg River is currently frozen approximately 100 metres from each side, with flowing water in the middle and a strong current.

“Police are seeing people in the area assisting with the search head out on the ice,” a news release read. “The ice is dangerous at this time, and RCMP are asking everyone to stay off the unstable surface.”

The search continued Wednesday morning.
