WINNIPEG — Two men have been charged after they allegedly robbed Garden City Shopping Centre on Wednesday afternoon and then threatened security staff with an axe and a knife.
Police responded to the 2300 block of McPhillips Street at around noon, where security staff had reported the suspects fled on foot west on McPhillips. Witnesses in the area provided officers with details on the suspect’s whereabouts, who were later located in the area of McPhillips Street and Kingsbury Avenue.
Police say one of the suspects raised a hatchet at two security members when confronted over a clothing theft from one of the mall’s retailers. Security followed the suspects, who took out a hatchet and a knife and began swinging the weapons at both victims.
No injuries were reported and police were able to recover the stolen merchandise.
Brandon Alexander Leach, 24, and a 33-year-old man — both from Winnipeg — have been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, and two counts of uttering threats.
