A man who came across an RCMP checkstop in Steinbach, Manitoba is facing identity fraud and other charges.

The Winnipeg driver was travelling on Highway 12 in Steinbach on December 10 when he went through a holiday checkstop. RCMP say he couldn’t provide the vehicle’s registration and was asked to pull over.

Police determined the vehicle was stolen and that the driver was in possession of counterfeit currency, break-in tools, and drug paraphernalia.

Cory Couture, 38, faces several charges. The vehicle was also seized.

From December 10-16, RCMP stopped 3,530 vehicles in 70 checkstops province-wide. Of those, 18 people were charged with alcohol-impaired driving, five for refusing a breathalyzer, and 17 for improper storage of alcohol or cannabis in a vehicle. Eight alcohol-related tiered suspensions were also given out.

The highest blood alcohol reading was .300 — nearly four times the legal limit.
