Christmas Shopping

WINNIPEG — With Christmas just a few days away, Winnipeg shoppers will be hitting the malls Friday to check off those last-minute gifts from their list.

Record-setting sales are predicted today, as the Friday before Christmas is generally the busiest shopping day of the year. It’s also typically too late to order gifts online to receive them in time before Christmas Day.

Moneris, a credit and debit payment processing firm, says 1 p.m. central will be the peak time for the most transactions across the country. In other words, you may want to avoid the malls today.

On the food side of things, Moneris also says grocery stores will also be seeing increased foot traffic. Transactions for groceries last year on this day were up 106 percent compared to the year before.

If you’re beginning to panic and haven’t started your holiday shopping, you aren’t alone. Moneris adds, last year, Newfoundland had the largest number of last-minute shoppers, followed by consumers in British Columbia and New Brunswick.
