Winnipeg Police Find Drug Haul After Suspect Calls to Report an Assault

Winnipeg Police CrestIf you’re going to call Winnipeg police to report a crime, perhaps it would be a wise idea to get rid of your drugs first.

Police say a city man called them on Wednesday to report he had been assaulted at a hotel in the 1700 block of Ellice Avenue, but didn’t know where the suspects were.

Police arrived at the man’s hotel room to find cocaine and placed him under arrest.

During a search of the room, officers located 24 grams of methamphetamine worth $3,000, 20 tablets of fentanyl worth $1,600, 51.5 grams of cocaine worth $3,200, 70 tablets of Xanax worth $350, drug-related packaging materials and $17,545 in Canadian currency.

The man was taken to hospital, but released without requiring medical treatment.

Peter Alfred Melquist, 39, faces several drug-related charges and remains in custody.
