Winnipeg police used its K9 unit to track down a man accused of stealing a car and crashing it into a snowbank on Monday.
A condominium complex in the 100 block of Creek Bend Road was broken into at around 4:20 a.m., resulting in several vehicles in the parkade being entered.
One of those vehicles contained a spare key that had been left in the console. Police spotted the stolen vehicle shortly before 10 a.m. in the area of King Edward Street and Logan Avenue. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but abandoned their chase once it climbed to high speeds.
Police found the vehicle abandoned shortly after in a snowbank near King Edward Street and St. Matthews Avenue.
The K9 unit tracked the man hiding in a garbage dumpster behind a business in the 400 block of Berry Street.
Brent Vernon Arksey, 29, has been charged with numerous offences, including a break-in at a condo complex in the 800 block of Dovercourt Drive in September 2017. Police linked the man to the second incident after retrieving forensic evidence at the scene.
Arksey was detained in custody.
