A carjacker who thought he would get creative by dressing differently was arrested by Winnipeg police on Thursday.
The incident began near Edmonton Street and Broadway at around 9 a.m. when a 20-year-old man had his cargo van stolen at knifepoint.
The suspect took off in the ride and attempted another carjacking near Fermor Avenue and Dunkirk Drive at around 9:30 a.m. When the would-be victim refused to open his locked door, the man returned to the cargo van and sped away.
He later abandoned the van in the 100 block of Morier Avenue when he got into a nearby vehicle that was left running. He tried to drive away, but got stuck in the snow.
Police say that’s when the suspect got into another vehicle and stole clothing to put on. The owner confronted the suspect, who claimed to have a gun, returned the clothing and ran away.
That’s when he entered an unlocked garage in the 100 block of Haig Avenue and stole two jackets and a sweater.
The K9 unit tracked the suspect to the garage just before 11 a.m. and officers placed him under arrest.
Riley Craig Vermette, 22, has been charged with several offences and remains in custody.
