Winnipeg police have retired their CrimeStat website after 12 years of service, replacing it with a more interactive and modern experience called CrimeMaps.
The crime-mapping tool allows citizens to search for many more crime categories and crime types in different neighbourhoods, according to police.
Some of its features include:
- Adherence and alignment with Statistics Canada protocols for data production
- Customized searches by:
- Month or year to date
- Neighbourhood and community
- Crime category and crime type
The icons previously used in CrimeStat, which was enhanced in 2013, will now be replaced by colour codes of Winnipeg neighbourhoods which visualize crime volumes. The new data will be based on confirmed information. In the past, the numbers within different crime types were subject to change.
The latest data available on the website is from December 2018. Police say data will be published every three months to ensure completeness and accuracy of the data.
