Several Winnipeg police officers were assaulted over the weekend in a series of incidents that saw multiple people taken into custody.
Officers were first called Saturday to the 300 block of Wellington Crescent for a man carrying multiple large knives. While trying to disarm the man, police say the suspect armed himself with a 13-inch knife and threatened to stab and kill officers.
A Taser was used to try and subdue the suspect, but it was deemed ineffective. The man then barricaded himself in another room of the multi-suite residence. After roughly two hours, Kyle Anthony Traverse, 23, was taken into custody.
He has been charged with four counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and two counts of possession of a weapon.
Several hours later, officers were called to the 400 block of Ralph Avenue West for a man who was armed with a baseball bat in a garage causing damage. Police arrived to find the man striking items with the bat, including doors and walls.
The man became combative upon seeing police and began walking towards them swinging the bat.
Tactical support officers eventually apprehended the man, who has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and possessing a weapon.
Duane Errol Franklin, 54, remains in custody.
Later Saturday night, police came across an intoxicated woman driving a minivan in the area of Ellice Avenue and McGee Street.
The woman stopped, but then put the vehicle in reverse as police closed in, causing officers to dodge the vehicle. One officer had their foot run over by the Dodge Caravan as it fled at a high rate of speed.
Air 1 helped locate the van in the 300 block of Agnes Street. After a brief struggle, the woman was taken into custody.
Jennifer Lynn Pelletier, 42, faces numerous charges, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
