Police Charge Man in Two Winnipeg Liquor Store Robberies

Winnipeg Police Logo CrestA man believed to have been high on methamphetamine allegedly robbed a Liquor Mart Monday night and then tried to hide the bottles as police closed in.

The robbery happened in the 1600 block of Main Street at around 9:35 p.m. when the man entered with a large flashlight and stole numerous bottles, according to police. He also threatened to harm an employee before fleeing.

Air 1 tracked the suspect to the intersection of Aikins Street and Rupertsland Avenue, where he was spotted in residential yards before being apprehended by officers on the ground.

During the search, police say the suspect tried to hide several items, but officers later recovered his clothing and a bag containing the stolen liquor.

Further investigation found the same suspect was responsible for another robbery at the same Liquor Mart on April 8.

Bernard Wailunga, 25, of Winnipeg has been charged and remains in custody.
