Winnipeg Police Logo CrestA Winnipeg man is in custody after running from police Monday afternoon and tossing a loaded sawed-off rifle while trying to get away.

Police were responding to a report of a window that had been shot out in the 300 block of McGee Street when they noticed a home nearby with its door forced open in the 300 block of Agnes Street.

Officers spotted two men in front of the house and began to investigate. As they exited their cruisers, one of the men immediately took off, tossing the gun into the backyard of a home on St. Matthews Avenue.

Police eventually arrested him a short distance away, where they also found 1.2 grams of methamphetamine worth an estimated $120 and a spring-loaded knife.

Mitchell John Flett, 22, of Winnipeg faces drug, weapons and firearm-related charges.

He was detained in custody.
