New Flyer Industries has launched an autonomous technology program to develop and deploy self-driving buses.
The Winnipeg-based bus manufacturer says its guiding principle in the project is public safety, ensuring safe interaction among transit operators, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other buses.
“New Flyer is incredibly proud to make this step toward automation of transit buses,” said Chris Stoddart, president of New Flyer.
“Transit agencies across North America have been asking for progressive technology, regulators have shown commitment and support to technology advancement, and passenger confidence has been increasing as they experience autonomous technology firsthand.”
The technology includes advanced driver assistance systems and automated vehicles to be utilized in both Canada and the U.S.
