ROSSBURN, Man. — RCMP say an officer, as well as a suspect, were seriously injured during an arrest on a Manitoba reserve on Wednesday night.

Police say the officer, with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service, was responding to a disturbance at the Waywayseecappo First Nation gaming centre near Rossburn, about 320 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

Mounties say he became involved in an altercation in the parking lot with two suspects, was stabbed multiple times and fired his weapon.

A 21-year-old man is in serious but stable condition in hospital with a gunshot wound.

The police officer was treated for serious injuries and has since been released from hospital.

RCMP say the officer is 29-years-old and has been with the First Nations police service for seven years.

RCMP and the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba are investigating.
