WINNIPEG — Officials in Winnipeg say one person was found dead in a house fire in the city’s north end Saturday night.

In a news release Sunday morning, the city says fire crews and paramedics responded to the blaze just before 11 p.m. in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue.

Heavy flames and smoke had already enveloped the two-and-a-half-storey house, and two people had gotten out safely, but the city says crews found one person dead.

A cat was also found dead in the home.

The city says the fire was under control within a half hour and the cause is under investigation.
