Ten people are homeless tonight after a fire Wednesday evening in a rooming house in the 500 block of Ross Avenue.

Winnipeg firefighters arrived on scene at around 5:30 p.m. to find smoke coming from one of the suites of the two and a half storey building. The fire was contained shortly before 6 p.m.

Two people had self-evacuated, while one was assessed by paramedics. No injuries were reported.

Ten people were assisted by the city’s emergency social services team to find alternative accommodation.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is investigating the cause of the fire, but says it appears to be accidental due to unattended cooking.
