WINNIPEG — A fifth tower to rise at True North Square will house the new North American headquarters for the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company.
The announcement made Thursday by the company and True North Real Estate Development signals the start of the new state-of-the-art development to be built at the southwest corner of Carlton Street and Graham Avenue.
Wawanesa’s Winnipeg-based workforce has virtually doubled in size in the last five years, according to the company. Wawanesa will be the sole tenant of the new tower, bringing together 1,100 local employees under one roof.
“In expanding our presence in Winnipeg, we strengthen our ability to support the growing needs of our 5,000 employees and two million policyholders across North America,” said Evan Johnston, SVP, chief legal and strategy officer, Wawanesa Insurance.
True North Square is already home to 225 Carlton, 242 Hargrave, and the Sutton Place Hotel & Residences. The new 19-floor, 300 square foot tower will be immediately adjacent to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and directly across from the plaza at True North Square.
Construction is expected to be complete by 2023.
