Winnipeg Police Logo CrestTwo people are in police custody after a fire at an apartment building created an estimated $50,000 in damage.

The fire in the 400 block of Furby Street broke out Monday night just before 10 p.m.

People inside the building were able to safely evacuate and fire crews contained the blaze.

Police arrested a female suspect at the scene in possession of a lighter.

A second suspect was arrested on Wednesday in the 400 block of Maryland Street and found with a large knife, break-in tools and a small amount of methamphetamine.

Police say it’s believed the female had been recently evicted from a suite within the apartment building and returned with the male to set a fire inside the suite.

Talia Fawn Kent, 30, and Pieut Kenny Meekis, 29, face several charges and remain in custody.
