Two people were killed Sunday after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 east of Winnipeg in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

RCMP closed a portion of the highway near Barren Lake for more than 12 hours after a semi-truck collided with a pickup at around 11:15 a.m. Police say an eastbound vehicle stopped abruptly and the semi behind it tried to avoid a collision and crossed into the westbound lane. The semi then collided with a pickup truck travelling west, forcing both vehicles off the highway.

The 54-year-old man driving the pickup, along with his 17-year-old male passenger, were pronounced deceased on scene. They were both from Dryden, Ontario.

The 22-year-old Mississauga man driving the semi, along with a 28-year-old Brampton man in his passenger seat, both sustained minor injuries.

Falcon Lake RCMP are continuing to investigate.
