Winnipeg Police Logo CrestA stolen vehicle spotted by Winnipeg police crashed into an SUV Wednesday afternoon before the suspect took off on foot.

Officers were in the area of Raleigh Street and Chalmers Avenue when they noticed the stolen vehicle at around 1 p.m. Once the suspect abruptly stopped, police turned on their emergency lights and the vehicle sped off again, driving up onto a curb.

Police backed off from the pursuit before the vehicle ran several stop signs in the area. It then collided with an SUV at the intersection of Chalmers Avenue and Watt Street. The people in the second vehicle — a couple with their five-year-old daughter — were checked by paramedics and didn’t require medical attention.

Police apprehended the suspect in the 400 block of Harbison Avenue West shortly after the crash.

A search of the stolen vehicle turned up a large knife and a .6 gram bag of methamphetamine.

Brendan James Neufeld, 20, has been charged with numerous offences, including failing to comply with a probation order. He was treated in hospital for his injuries and medically cleared back into police custody.
