A Winnipeg police officer has been charged with assault following a probe into the arrest of a suspect last New Year’s Eve.
The Independent Investigation Unit says officers were responding to a break-in call on Boyd Avenue on December 31. Police located a man at the scene and arrested him, but had to use force in the process.
The suspect complained of soreness to his ribs and was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital. He was later diagnosed with broken ribs and a punctured lung.
The IIU continued with its investigation — first announced on January 2 — and determined a criminal offence occurred during the man’s arrest.
Cst. Matthew Middleton was notified of the charge on Wednesday. He will appear in Winnipeg court on November 13, 2019.
