A member of the RCMP has been charged after a lengthy investigation following a traffic stop on June 10, 2018.

The Independent Investigation Unit took charge of the probe on December 21, 2018 after it was notified that the officer fired at a vehicle that was accelerating toward him.

The incident began when the officer initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled into a wooded area. The officer got out of his cruiser to pursue the suspect on the foot. When the vehicle turned around and accelerated toward him, he fired his weapon.

The suspect fled and was later arrested. No injuries were reported.

The IIU determined a criminal offence occurred and notified Cst. Barry Kirby of the charge on September 19. He will appear in Selkirk court on November 15.
