WINNIPEG — Sunday’s Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services (WFPS) run has been cancelled over safety concerns related to the recent early winter storm.
Organizers say last week’s snowstorm downed trees and power lines along the racecourse. City officials recommended that the eighth annual event be cancelled.
“Safety is our first priority for our participants and volunteers”, said race director Jonathan Torchia.
“We have been working very close with the City of Winnipeg since the storm hit last week. While this decision was not an easy one to make, we know we have to do what’s best for our community.”
The annual WFPS Run Half Marathon 10K and 5K events have raised more than $350,000 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation with over 22,000 participants and 3,500 volunteers.
The shake out run scheduled for Saturday has also been cancelled due to safety concerns.
A virtual run will take place at a later date. Medals and race kits will still be available for pick-up at the Canadian Mennonite University until 7 p.m. tonight and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
