BRANDON, Man. — An explosion has extensively damaged a house in Brandon and claimed the life of at least one person.

The blast happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Queens Avenue East in the city’s Green Acres neighbourhood.

Brandon police say a 63-year-old woman was found deceased inside the home, while a 63-year-old man was listed in critical condition. He was transferred by STARS air ambulance to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

Emergency crews blocked off both vehicle and pedestrian access while they investigated.

Some nearby homes were evacuated for a brief period as a precaution.

There was no early word on the cause of the explosion, but some residents say there was a strong smell of gas in the area.
