A 31-year-old man is facing charges after Manitoba RCMP say he kidnapped a woman and then robbed a man of his pickup truck at gunpoint.
A citizen reported a dangerous driver on Highway 16 near Highway 50 on the evening of October 25. As police were responding to the call, things quickly escalated into a more serious situation.
Police say the person who called in the tip pulled over to the shoulder to avoid the vehicle, which was reported to be dangerously swerving all over the road. The eastbound vehicle continued towards her and she was forced to drive into the ditch.
The suspect then drove to a home along Highway 16 and demanded a truck from the homeowner a gunpoint. The truck later became stuck in a ditch and both the driver and passenger fled on foot.
Amaranth RCMP attending the original erratic driver call were able to track both suspects down with the help of a police dog. They soon learned that the passenger was actually a hostage who had been assaulted. She was known to the driver.
The man is facing kidnapping, armed robbery, and assault charges, along with several other offences. He remains in custody.
