Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a man for allegedly stabbing a three-year-old boy on Wednesday.
The child was in the company of his mother at a home in the 300 block of Pritchard Avenue when the attack happened.
Police say the child’s mother was assaulted first at an address on Main Street. The same suspect then attended the Pritchard Avenue location and assaulted the boy, according to police.
“I think it’s inconceivable to think that somebody would target an innocent child, probably one that was attempting to sleep at that time of night, very defenceless,” police Const. Jay Murray said Thursday.
Murray said Jensen and the mother previously were in a relationship, but he is not the child’s father.
The child was provided emergency first aid by officers and then taken to hospital. He remains in grave condition.
Police arrested the suspect just after 4 p.m. Wednesday after spotting him in the area of McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue.
Daniel Jensen of Winnipeg, 33, has been charged with attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm, six counts of failing to comply with a recognizance order and failing to comply with a probation order.
Jensen remains in custody.
