Two break and enter suspects who tried to outrun Manitoba RCMP landed themselves in a ditch Thursday morning.

Police responded to the B&E at a home on Highway 26 in the RM of St. Francois Xavier at around 10:30 a.m. after the homeowners, who were out of the country, were alerted by their security system that their home was broken into.

Nearby family members were the first on the scene and saw two people with stolen goods leaving the home. They followed the suspects and contacted police while communicating their whereabouts.

Police spotted the stolen Ford F-150 on Highway 26, but the suspects tried to outrun officers by driving into a farmer’s field. The truck blew a tire and became stuck on an embankment.

A short foot chase ended with a 19-year-old woman and 27-year-old man being taken into custody. Both suspects are from Winnipeg and had outstanding arrest warrants from other jurisdictions.

During the crash, the pair was injured and had to be taken to hospital. As a result, the Independent Investigation Unit is looking into the circumstances surrounding the police pursuit.

Police say they found a substance believed to be meth inside the vehicle, which was stolen from the RM of Springfield.

Headingley RCMP continues to investigate.
