An escaped inmate stole a vehicle and led officers on a joyride Wednesday after bolting from Headingley Correctional Centre.

The 21-year-old man, in custody awaiting trial for second-degree murder, escaped at around 11:45 a.m.

RCMP responded and located the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. Officers followed with lights and sirens activated until the suspect lost control. Police say the vehicle went into the ditch at Road 40 E and Road 49 N, northeast of St. Anne, Manitoba.

The man was arrested and placed back into custody. He is facing multiple charges.

No injuries were reported and RCMP continue to investigate.
