Winnipeg police opened fire Thursday afternoon on a suspect armed with a knife outside of a 7-Eleven store in the city’s West End.

Officers were called to the convenience store at the corner of Ellice Avenue and Arlington Street at around 5:30 p.m. for an attempted robbery.

Officers encountered a man with a knife who walked out of the store and approached them holding his hand in the air. In a dramatic cell phone video posted to social media, nine shots can be heard after officers repeatedly tell the man to “drop the knife.”

The suspect falls to the ground and other officers surround him. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police tape surrounded the store Thursday evening as blood-stained pavement could be seen near the parking lot.

One officer was taken to hospital with injuries but has since been released.

The Independent Investigation Unit deployed a team to the scene. No further details are available.
