Municipal leaders from across the province are in Brandon this week for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities 21st annual convention.
The convention will open this afternoon with an address by AMM president and Morris Reeve Ralph Groening, followed by greetings from Premier Brian Pallister and St. Boniface-St. Vital MP Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs. Joe MacInnis, a medical doctor, explorer, and storyteller, is scheduled to deliver the day’s keynote address.

The convention will wrap Wednesday with a keynote from Major M.J. Hegar, a recipient of the Purple Heart and a Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor. While piloting her third tour of Afghanistan, she was shot down. Badly injured, and under heavy fire, she still flew her team to safety, conducting a near-impossible landing. When her injuries barred her from service, she fought a policy that excluded women — a historic victory for female military members.
Hegar made headlines last year for her viral campaign video, “Doors,” (below) that described her career in the military. Hegar is currently running as a Democrat candidate in the upcoming U.S. Senate race in Texas.
The three-day AMM convention runs November 25-27 at the Keystone Centre.
