WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba has received $2.5 million towards the future Desautels Concert Hall on the Fort Garry campus.
The gift comes from Dr. Michael F.B. Nesbitt to support the construction of the new performing arts venue.
“The Desautels Concert Hall will be the strategic capstone of the Taché Arts Project, the realisation of a longstanding dream that will have a tremendous impact on our faculty, university, and community,” said Dr. Edward Jurkowski, dean of the Desautels Faculty of Music.
The donation will equip the space with an orchestra pit and other acoustic design features that will support opera and musical theatre for the university.
Dr. Nesbitt has contributed to lectureships and graduate scholarships in biological sciences, The Babs Asper Jazz Professorship, the Bridge Jazz Music Outreach program, and Indigenous education, among others.
The donation brings the university closer to its $500 million Front and Centre campaign fundraising goal, currently sitting at $373,011,296.
