First comes Movember, then Decembeard, but the Festival du Voyageur Beard Growing Contest is in a league of its own.

The 38th annual follicle-focused competition is now accepting registrations ahead of the February 22 event.

“A Patrik Laine beard won’t make the cut at this contest,” organizers said in a cheeky release. “Rest asheared, only the wooliest, softest, and curliest of beards will impress our worthy panel of judges.”

The four categories participants will compete in are: clean-shaven, Voyageur beard, novelty and open.

“Beards are very popular in our neck of the woods,” says Nicolas Audette, director of marketing and communications for Festival du Voyageur.

“They offer great protection from the whistling winds of a harsh prairie winter and also make for a good reason to gather and raise funds for a worthy cause.”

The competition has raised more than $5,000 for charity over the years. The United Way Winnipeg is the 2020 charitable recipient.
