A Brandon University student has earned a top international education award.

Kaoane Loch is the recipient of the 2019 Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) International Student Award in the language program category.

Loch won as a student in BU’s English for Academic Purposes program, making it the first time that an EAP student at BU has been awarded the honour.

“I wasn’t expecting this at all, it’s so exciting,” Loch said. “I have just been trying my best, and the recognition is amazing. The EAP program has helped me a lot — I can see how my English has improved.”

Loch, a native of Brazil, has also now been admitted to BU as a regular student, qualifying her to join the BU Bobcats women’s volleyball team. She is scheduled to make her Bobcat debut on home court on January 3, 2020.

“I came here to play volleyball and study, this is totally a dream come true,” Loch said. “I love to be a Bobcat, and I’m so grateful to everyone on my team and at BU. I feel so welcomed by the community and teammates.”

Koch played pro-level volleyball in her home country and served a stint on the Brazilian national team.
